Winning Candle Floats in Ubon Ratchathani 2011

July 17, 2011

The Candle Procession Festival took place in Ubon Ratchathani on 16 July 2011. This day marks the start of the Buddhist Lent and when candles are presented to local temples.

These elaborately carved candles, some taking months to make, took part in the parade in Ubon on Saturday. The above float by the community in Amphoe Boontarik, won first prize for best carved candle. They received 200,000 Baht.

This second float also won but in the category of patching. This is putting an overlay of wax on the sculptures. This was done by Wat Pradoo and they too won 200,000 Baht. This may sound like a lot of money, but some of these 15 meter long floats cost 350,000 Baht to make.
