A Bicycle Friendly Park in Bangkok

There are not too many places in Bangkok where cyclists can go with their bicycle and feel safe. It is true that the BMA have built more cycling lanes around the city but many of these are either blocked by parked cars or are being used by motorcyclists. I have tried cycling at some of the parks in Bangkok but the majority don’t allow bicycles or they restrict the hours which you can use them. So, I was really pleased to find out about Suan Rot Fai, or The Railway Park, which is a cyclists paradise in the heart of Bangkok. You can find it just to the north of Chatuchak Weekend Market [MORE].
Nice parc, not far from Talat Rotfai, vintage week-end night flea market. But…I would not call chatujak the “heart of Bangkok”…
Most likely true, but where would you say the city center is? I don’t think it is very obvious for Bangkok. Maybe the shopping malls at Siam? Depends a lot on your perspective I think.
I have had many discussions about where the center of Bangkok is. I always thought it funny to look at hotel brochures where all of them claim their hotel is located in the center or in the heart of Bangkok or something along those lines.
Like you said Richard it depends on your perspective I think. For me the center has always been the Pratunam area, probably because that’s where I stayed during my first visit 😉
I had a great day out on bikes visiting Muang Boran, the ancient city in the south of Bangkog. There is an entrance fee of course..surprisingly enough it’s 250 for Thais (125 for kids) and 400 for foreigners (200 for kids)…no dual pricing for bikes: 50 Baht each
Good to hear you had a great time. For the record it is in Samut Prakan and not Bangkok. It is just down the road from me and you probably passed my house on the way there.
Bear in mind that if you take the BTS to Mo Chit….when you arrive then the part of the park immediately next to the BTS IS NOT the railway cycling park. You ARE NOT allowed to cycle there.
Go down the BTS steps, bear left around the park past all the bus stops and taxis (as you face it from the BTS station), follow to the right round the corner and you’ll see Thanon Kamphaeng. Go down it. The Railway Park you can cycle in is on your left.
Any entrance will do.
If you want to you can cut through the other part of the park with your bike so long as you walk with it. Don’t try a sneaky cycle. The security get very upset.
