Thai official refuses to be searched at Suvarnabhumi; caught on video whacking officer

January 11, 2012

A Thai customs official has been caught on video physically assaulting an airport security guard at Suvarnabhumi. The incident happened when the Thai customs official was passing through the security checkpoint and he set off the alarm. He was asked to stand still for a search but he refused. In the video you can see him pointing to his badge and then hitting the security guard across the ears. The guard is then seen apologizing by repeatedly bowing.

It is not known how this surveillance footage was leaked and uploaded onto Youtube. But, it makes you wonder how often this goes on. How many other senior government officials pull rank and refuse to go through proper security checks before boarding planes? This attitude makes nonsense of all the security checks at the airport and puts the safety of passengers, both local and foreign, in jeopardy. When these officials arrive back from abroad with dozens of bags full of contraband, do they also sidestep security and customs? An independent inquiry into security and passenger safety at Suvarnabhumi airport is urgently needed.

UPDATE: The senior customs official has now been named as Sombat Chatchaiyawit. According to The Nation, the police have issued a summons for him. If he does not report to the police within seven days they will issue an arrest warrant. According to latest reports, Sombat Chatchaiyawit has been transferred back to HQ pending am investigation which could take up to 30 days.

2nd UPDATE: According to Thai newspapers this morning, Sombat wasn’t boarding a plane on that day in question. He was escorting executives through security to see them off on an international flight. Of course, that doesn’t excuse is actions.

He is not smuggling anything. He is a fool. One of those guys who thinks he is too high rank to even be searched.

We all know what will happen! This guy is obviously connected to the right family. He will be on gardening leave for a few months and then back to dishing out more abuse.
You can actually get away with murder in thailand if you are connected.

How dare they search this man of power, money and influence!
The likely outcome will be the security guard will lose their job and the official will be vindicated according to Thai cultural norms.

Unless they do something about people like this abusing the system how can I feel safe as a traveller in Thailand?
