This weekend sees the grand opening of yet another shopping mall for Bangkokians. This one is called MEGA Bangna [MAP] and is billed as the largest low-rise shopping mall in Southeast Asia. I am not sure if that is true, but it is certainly large. They have 800 shops and parking for 8,000 vehicles. The anchor stores include: Robinson, Big C Extra, HomePro, Mega Cineplex and IKEA. Mega Cineplex includes 15 digital cinemas, 24 bowling lanes, 28 karaoke rooms & 1,000 sq.m ice skate rink. I watched a movie there the other day and I can say that it was both an enjoyable and comfortable experience. Ticket price was 170 Baht for a movie with an English language soundtrack.

The run-down of different kinds of shops include 200 leading fashion boutiques, 100 cafe and dining establishments, 30 kids stores, 35 stores giving pleasure to your leisure time, 30 IT, gadgets and electronic appliance outlets, 30 beauty and wellness providers, 10 home decor shops and 11 leading banks. MEGA Bangna is the first shopping mall in Samut Prakan Province. It is conveniently located on the intersection of Bang Na-Trad Highway and the Outer Ring Ring (Eastern). By skytrain go as far as BTS Udomsuk and take Exit 5. There is a free shuttle bus there that goes every 30 minutes.

At the end of the day, it is really just another shopping mall. Although the style of being a low-rise mall is different, you will find many of the shops are very familiar as most are chain stores. However, there are a few unique shops and I also saw that a few Bangkok restaurants had opened a second location here at the Mega Bangna. Which is good for us people living in the suburbs. I think that Mega Bangna will be of great interest to transit passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport. This is because the mall is only 15 minutes or so away by taxi. Now there is time to watch a movie, play bowling or have a go at ice skating while waiting for your plane. There are also many first class restaurants.

I felt as if I was in a generic mall in Singapore. Many of the Brands are easily found in Singapore, and even the food court, “Food Republic” is a generic Food Court found in 90% of all malls in Singapore. Am I really still in Bangkok ???
One store to bring in, might be “National Geographic”. FOr those who have been to the one in Singapore, it’s on the ground floor of Vivo-City, opposite Sentosa Island.
There isn’t much of interest for me. Mainly fashion shops. But the cinema is good and a few specialist shops that we don’t get around here. At the end of the day it’s good we have our first mall in Samut Prakan.
For some reason, I was not ecstatic when I went to Mega Bangna. Perhaps I expected more. On the other hand, I actually liked the other night-bazaar located 1km to the south of Erawan Museum along Sukhumvit Road. It opens from 5pm till around 10pm only on Sundays. 25% of it is food.
Do check it out..
I always find Bangkok Malls much more interesting than Singapore’s. They are larger, more interesting colors to please the eyes and the cinemas, unbeatable.
Is that near by BTS?
Not really, but they have free shuttle bus from BTS Udom Suk to IKEA which is part of the same complex.
Is this by any chance near Novotel Bangna
Less than 10 minutes away
We r moving to Bangkok in a yr or so, we r looking at bangna, or bang Phree area near megabangna . We appreciate your comments. Would this be a good place to buy a home?
Is this place nearer to Suva Airport, BTS Udom Suk or Samut Prakan ?
Thinking of visiting the place but not sure if I shall do it when I visit Samut Prakan or just anywhere from Bangkok.
The answer is yes to all three. It is about 20 minutes from the airport. It is in fact in Samut Prakan Province. And there is a free shuttle bus service from BTS Udom Suk.
Hi, Do anyone know the opening times on Saturdays?
10-10 .. every day.
Hi, is shuttle bus runs every 30-minutes ?
Need to queue up for long time for shuttle bus ?
Still have this service for coming half year ?
thanks very much
I’ve never taken it but often seen them on the road so I would say that they are regular. The ones I passed didn’t look too full. But they are obviously busier at the weekends.
thanks, Richard.
May I know how much taxi fare to airport and duration please.
From Mega BangNa? I will guess 30 minutes and maybe 150 Baht. Plus toll fees.
