It offers tips, advice, guidelines, and information on preserving local nature and culture, as well as search and rescue facilities.
New places are opening all the time around Bangkok. I have already been to some of the new ones like Asiatique, Terminal 21 and MEGA Bangna. Chocolate Ville is a new place that I have heard about but not been to yet. However, there are some places on the following top ten lists I’ve never heard about. Like The Promenade which is number one this week for Instagram pictures in Thailand. That’s one of the good things about the new social media where it allows people to check-in or have their pictures mapped. It gives us armchair travellers a chance to find new places that might be worth visiting. This first list are the Top 10 for Instagram locations this week. The second list is the Top 10 of places people check-in using Foursquare. As you can see, most are shopping malls or restaurants. But, it does show you what’s new and trendy for Thais. Scroll down for the map link to find the locations. The most popular locations yesterday in Bangkok on Instagram The Promenade (เดอะ พรอมานาด) Siam Paragon (สยามพารากอน) Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) ท่าอากาศยานสุวรรณภูมิ Asiatique The Riverfront (เอเชียทีค เดอะ ริเวอร์ฟร้อนท์) Chocolate Ville (ชอคโกแลต วิลล์) Sonic Ekmai (โซนิก เอกมัย) Chaophya [...]

This weekend sees the grand opening of yet another shopping mall for Bangkokians. This one is called MEGA Bangna [MAP] and is billed as the largest low-rise shopping mall in Southeast Asia. I am not sure if that is true, but it is certainly large. They have 800 shops and parking for 8,000 vehicles. The anchor stores include: Robinson, Big C Extra, HomePro, Mega Cineplex and IKEA. Mega Cineplex includes 15 digital cinemas, 24 bowling lanes, 28 karaoke rooms & 1,000 sq.m ice skate rink. I watched a movie there the other day and I can say that it was both an enjoyable and comfortable experience. Ticket price was 170 Baht for a movie with an English language soundtrack. The run-down of different kinds of shops include 200 leading fashion boutiques, 100 cafe and dining establishments, 30 kids stores, 35 stores giving pleasure to your leisure time, 30 IT, gadgets and electronic appliance outlets, 30 beauty and wellness providers, 10 home decor shops and 11 leading banks. MEGA Bangna is the first shopping mall in Samut Prakan Province. It is conveniently located on the intersection of Bang Na-Trad Highway and the Outer Ring Ring (Eastern). By skytrain go as far as BTS Udomsuk and take [...]

Ever since the closing of Suan Lum Night Bazaar, people have been asking me about an alternative night market in Bangkok. At first I thought that Siam Paradise Night Bazaar on Sukhumwit would be a suitable replacement. But that hasn’t hit off. Now we have Asiatique The Riverfront which is the best contender so far. It sits between Charoen Krung Road and the Chao Phraya River on a plot of land that used to be the warehouses for a Danish company called The East Asiatic Company Limited. The main archway in this waterfront property dates back over 100 years. In fact much of the architecture reflects back to the reign of King Rama V and is either original or an authentic replica. Asiatique, which is a true night bazaar as it is open daily from 5 p.m. to midnight, had its grand opening just last week. When I visited, not all of the shops and restaurants were open, but when complete, they claim that they will have 1,500 shops and 40 restaurants. Of the shops that are open already, I did notice that some of them looked much the same as those at Suan Lum Night Bazaar. In fact, one shop-owner I did ask, said that he used to have a [...]

For a long time, people have been grumbling that Bangkok doesn’t have a one ticket policy for transport across the capital. Whenever we travel on the subway, skytrain or buses, we have to use different passes for each of them. However, with the introduction of the Rabbit Card on 1st May 2012, we have come a step close to achieving one card for them all. In the first stage, the Rabbit Card can be used on the BTS Skytrain and about 20 retail shops such as McDonald’s, Starbucks, Black Canyon, Au Bon Pain, Burger King, Mister Donut, Oishi Group, and selected outlets in Siam Paragon and The Emporium. Towards the end of the year, the Rabbit Card will also be able to be used on the MRT Subway and the BRT Buses. ‘Rabbit’ is modeled on similar international smartcard systems, such as in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and England. During the launch period, holders of BTS smartcards, both stored value and 30-day trip passes, can exchange their cards for ‘Rabbit’ without having to pay an issuing fee. For those not holding a BTS card, ‘Rabbit’ will be available for a special introductory issuing fee of 50 baht plus a 50 baht refundable [...]

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has announced that the Mu Ko Surin National Park and the Mu Ko Similan National Park will be closed to all tourist activities between May 1 and October 31. The closure of both islands is intended for the natural rehabilitation of the areas as well as the distribution of tourism to nearby travel destinations. Additionally, many of the park’s areas are prone to natural disasters, which may be caused by the changing weather. In the meantime, travelers can still visit other tourist destinations in Phang Nga province, such as Phang Nga Bay, Khao Tapu, Khao Phing Kan, Lod Cave, Khai Island, Thai Mueang Beach, Khao Lak Beach and Koh Kho Khao Island, among others. The Surin and Similan archipelagos are scheduled to be reopened in November 2012. Thailand is set to propose the Similan Island to be registered as a world heritage.
During my recent trip to Hat Yai, I stayed in Tune Hotel for the first time. This is a part of a chain of 3-star hotels. In Thailand at the moment they have one in Hat Yai and another in Pattaya. They are listed as a budget hotel. However, they have a five star bed and shower which I couldn’t fault at all. It is also conveniently located. Only a ten minute walk from the train station, and the airport bus starts/stops around the corner. To walk to the main shopping area around Lee Gardens takes about 10 minutes. As it is a relatively new hotel, it is also a very clean environment. The security on duty, the man above, and the reception staff were all very helpful and friendly. Tune Hotels are able to keep the prices low because they only give you the basics in the room price. This means that if you want things like air-con, cable TV, WiFi and even a towel you have to pay extra. I should also add that there is no fridge or wardrobe. So, if you are a budget traveller, you probably would be happy to pay a low price for a comfortable and [...]

The opening times are from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. I took these pictures in the late afternoon which has the added advantage in that you can take shots of the crematorium lit up at night. Although the gates close at 7 p.m., I am told that the lights will stay on until 10 p.m. Department officials who took part in the design of the crematorium will serve as tour guides and explain concepts and meanings behind the architectural work to visitors four times daily – 10am, 2pm, 4pm and 6pm. However, you don’t have to join these tours. The royal chariot and palanquins used during the late princess’s funeral procession are on display at the Chariot Hall of the nearby National Museum. People are allowed to take photographs, though they should be dressed respectfully. Areas off limits to visitors are the actual crematorium, the main central pavilion and the temporary Song Tham Throne Hall. The funeral buildings, including the crematorium, will be dismantled later this month.
If you missed out on the Songkran water fights over the last few days or want a second round then head to Bangsaen in Chonburi for their Songkran Festival on the beach. As well as the water fights, there are free concerts and fun & games on the beach. There is also a Sand Pagoda building competition. The Wan Lai Bangsaen Festival is taking place this week, 16th-17th April 2012. This is the annual water flowing festival that takes place a few days after Songkran. People in this area of Chonburi Province are descendants of the Mon and they celebrate Songkran later than the rest of the country. The highlight for the Bangsaen festival is the sand pagodas that are built on the beach on the first day of the festival. It is traditional in temples all around the country to make merit by building sand pagodas. In Bangsaen the local people build both gigantic and beautiful sand pagodas. On Monday and Tuesday, Beach Road will be one long traffic jam of pick-up trucks with large barrels of water on the back. Thousands of people will be having fun splashing water at each other.
The Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha will be CLOSED during the funeral of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana. The dates are 9th-12th April 2012. However, I am told that there will be limited opening on the morning of 11th April. Straight after the funeral it is the Songkran new year holidays in Thailand. I am told by the Royal Household Bureau that the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha will be open during Songkran. Please don’t believe anyone that tells you otherwise. Always check with an official first. Scam artists prey on tourists in front of the palace and try to send them to a jewellery shop or tailors instead. If you are in Bangkok at this time, you should take the opportunity to visit the crematorium on Sanam Luang next to the palace before it is pulled down. It is open for free to the public from 11th-17th April. Click here to see the schedule for the funeral that we have so far.

One of the biggest festivals in Thailand is Songkran, which is the traditional Thai new year. Most foreign tourists know about it because it is the biggest water fight in the world. But, there are some more traditional activities that you can take part in at local temples (see here). If you are coming for the Songkran Festival, then do be prepared to get wet. Before you come, read my Tips for Enjoying Songkran to get the most out of it. In recent years, Songkran has been fixed to 13-15 April every year. However, some areas celebrate Songkran a bit later. I am gathering together here all of the dates that I have found so far. I am double checking as many as I can but times and dates are always going to be subject to change. If you know of any corrections or can add more then please post in the comments. Songkran happens in every town and city in Thailand so don’t worry if you don’t see your destination listed here. Have fun! BANGKOK: The three main areas in Bangkok to celebrate Songkran and to get wet seem to be Khao San Road (mainly foreigners), Silom Road (mainly Thai) [...]

Suvarnabhumi International Airport has urged travelers to check in 3-4 hours before departure time to allow plenty of time in case of long queues during the upcoming Songkran holidays. According to Suvarnabhumi Airport Director Somchai Sawasdipol, the number of both international and domestic travelers is expected to increase by 10% from that of the Songkran period last year. A total of 9,437 take-offs and landings (6,795 international and 2,642 domestic) have been requested from Airports of Thailand (AoT) between April 9 and 18. The average daily passenger throughput during the 10-day period is expected to reach 170,000, up from around 160,000 a day in the past two weeks.
Songkran Water Fights at Ancient Siam in Samut Prakan It is nearly time for the most popular Thai Festival, Songkran 2012, which takes place all over Thailand in mid April every year. This is the traditional Thai new year which is the most enjoyable of all festivals both for Thai people and foreign tourists. Songkran is widely known as the water festival as people have lots of fun splashing water over each other during the three day festival. However, Songkran is more than just waterfights. I took the following pictures in Samut Prakan Province of some more Songkran activities. Other provinces in Thailand will also have their own festivities similar to this for Songkran. Merit Making during Songkran Early on the morning of 13th April, I will be joining hundreds of local people in Samut Prakan to give alms to monks. Thai people do this to make merit which is a good way to start the new year [More Pictures]. Songkran Parades Many cities around Thailand will have Songkran Parades to mark the start of the festival. I took the picture of this colourful float in a parade at Phra Pradaeng in Samut Prakan [More Pictures]. Miss Songkran Beauty Contest [...]
