Preparations for the royal cremation of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana on 9th April this year will follow the same guidelines as those for the royal cremation of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra in 2008. There will be public performances on three open-air stages within the Sanam Luang ceremonial ground in Bangkok, which is the venue for the royal cremation. The first stage, located on the northern side of Sanam Luang, comprises khon masked drama, nang yai (great shadow play), hun krabok hun lakhon lek (a puppet show), and music. The second stage, located in front of the Supreme Court, consists of hun krabok puppetry, featuring the story of Phra Aphai Mani, a romantic adventure in Thai literature. The third is located in front of Thammasat University and consists of lakhon dance drama featuring the story of Sang Thong. All the performances will take place from 7 p.m. on Monday 9th April to 6 a.m. on Tuesday 10th April. Monday has been declared a public holiday so that people can attend the cremation.
Bangkok is not all about concrete and cars. Nor is there just temples and palaces for tourists to see. If you are heading to Bangkok for your next holiday then consider joining one of the cycle tours around the city. You will be surprised how safe and easy it can be. Quite often after setting off on these tours you will soon find yourself down small backstreets or even in the jungle. I have been visiting Bangkok for years and it wasn’t until I started cycling around the city did I start to see a very different kind of metropolis. Away from the normal tourist attractions, and down lanes too narrow for tour vans, you will be meeting the Thai people in their own backyard. See how they live and find some hidden gems that are never mentioned in guidebooks. Follow Me Bike Tours are offering two bicycle tours. Each of them last about four hours and cover about 20 kilometers. I recently joined Follow Me for their “Siam Boran” bicycle tour of the historical sights of Bangkok. The Siam Boran tour took us on both sides of the river and included two cross-river ferries. We saw more events and every day [...]

The inaugural Millennium Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony was held for the first time on Valentine’s Day 1996. The event which attracted 30 participants from 28 countries set a new Guinness World Record and put Trang on the world map. Video footage of the underwater wedding extravaganza was seen on international TV. Given its uniqueness and popularity, Trang’s underwater wedding ceremony has become an annual event. Although it is named the underwater wedding ceremony, the event was designed to promote the various interesting aspects of the traditional Thai wedding ceremony. This includes wedding processions and blessing ceremony on the beach and then the actual wedding underwater. To be eligible, couples, relatives and guests taking part in the event are required to be certified divers. The next underwater wedding will be held during 10-12 February 2012.
This sign that I spotted on a popular beach really sums it up well: “We kindly request that you respect Thai culture by not sunbathing nude”. Thai people are taught from an early age to be modest. Despite Bangkok’s international reputation, it is not common to see Thai people in skimpy clothing. Certainly not respectable people. If a Thai women is spotted in a tight fitting outfit in the middle of the day, you might hear other Thai people comment disdainfully that she is most likely a prostitute. Schools and government offices won’t let you enter if you are not dressed respectfully. That goes for the Immigration office in Pattaya. Around town, despite the hot weather, most Thai people are covered up. This is partly because they don’t want to get a sun-tan, but also because of modesty. In fact, it is against the law for men to appear in public places without a shirt. Try telling that to the Western backpackers on Khao San Road who often walk around without a shirt. The same goes for public beaches. Most Thai people will swim in their clothes and even when they are sitting in the shade under beach umbrellas, they [...]

Thailand is once again safe for Israeli travellers, according to a report in the Jerusalem Post last night. The Counter Terrorism Bureau in Israel released a statement yesterday saying a previous “severe travel warning” issued two weeks ago over the likelihood of an immediate attack against Israelis in Bangkok has been cancelled because of the work of the Thai security forces. This included the arrest of an alleged Hezbollah operative and the uncovering of a weapons storehouse in the country. However, because of the possibility that there remains some terrorist infrastructure in Thailand, and in light of concern that Hezbollah will try to avenge the 2008 killing of Hezbollah’s shadowy commander Imad Muganiyah on the anniversary of his death on February 12, Israelis travelling to the country are advised to exercise caution. About 120,000 Jewish tourists visit Thailand every year. In Bangkok there is a large Jewish community as well a Chabad house, which is a Jewish cultural center. The cancelling of the “severe travel warning” by the Israelis follows the withdrawal last week of the security warning issued by the Chinese government. At the moment, we are waiting for the US Embassy in Bangkok to re-evaluate their security warning.

If you are on holiday in Bangkok and want to upload some holiday photos or talk to family and friends on video chat, then you might want to consider checking out Terminal 2. This is Bangkok’s latest themed shopping mall which can be accessed directly from BTS Asok. Apart from having some air-conditioned comfort after a busy day of sightseeing, you can also make use of their free WiFi. All you have to do is show the information desk on the ground floor a copy of your passport. You are then given a username and password that lasts a generous one year. You will be automatically logged out every two hours, but the speeds that I got were impressive. I managed to clock 6.98 Mbps for downloads and 3.98 Mbps for uploads. This will of course vary. It seemed to work throughout the shopping mall and also on the platform of the nearby skytrain station. What about you? Where else in Bangkok have you got fast free WiFi?

Unfortunately, some foreign tourists might never get a chance to see the festivities. This is because the scammers are out trying to divert you to their tailor or jewellery shops. I went to Chinatown on the subway getting off at MRT Hua Lamphong. From here it is only a short walk to Chinatown Gate which is on the edge of Chinatown. While I was here taking pictures, a guy came up to me and started to explain that tomorrow is Chinese New Year. He also added that the King will be coming soon. He asked me where I was from and then asked where I was going. As soon as I said Chinatown, he said, [...]

A second class air-conditioned bus route opened Thursday from Chiang Mai to Luang Pabang as the 8th route linking Thailand with the Lao PDR. The route opening ceremony took place at the Chiang Mai Arcade bus terminal. The 44-seater air-conditioned bus departs once a day from Chiang Mai province and makes a stop in Chiang Rai before crossing the border to Louang Namtha, Oudomxay and Luang Prabang provinces of Laos. The journey takes 18 hours and the fare is 1,200 Baht. Once the fourth bridge across the Mekong River from Thailand, linking Chiang Khong with the Lao PDR’s Huay Xai, is finished next year, first class air-conditioned buses will replace the second services with a fare of 1,500 Baht. In related news, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Transport Silapachai Jarukasemrattana said the high-speed train project from Bangkok-Chiang Mai should be ready for service in 2017. He said currently a study is beng carried out to see which route is to start first. Apart from the Bangkok-Chiang Mai route, two other preliminary routes are in the project: Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima and Bangkok-Hua Hin. The high-speed rail journeys are expected to link the entire country within 3-4 hours, Mr Silpacha said. Sources: MCOT and [...]
